What Is a Credenza Desk?

A credenza desk provides additional workspace and storage and is commonly used with a primary office desk. In a business or executive office, the credenza is often positioned against the wall immediately behind the main desk, close enough that the user can access it simply by turning around in their office chair. The desktop provides a convenient place for a printer, phone, computer, books, paperwork, and other frequently used office equipment.

A desk credenza can also be used as a workstation of its own, particularly in a home office where space may be limited. Its relatively compact footprint provides useful desktop space while leaving more of the room available for seating, storage, and other furniture.

Credenza Desks for Home Offices

A credenza desk can make an excellent home office desk when available space is limited. The work surface provides room for a laptop or computer and frequently includes storage for files and office supplies without requiring the footprint of a larger executive desk.

For laptop users, a credenza can provide plenty of usable workspace on its own. When used with desktop monitors, adding monitor arms or mounts can lift the displays off the work surface and increase the amount of usable desktop space. This can make a shallower credenza considerably more functional as a computer workstation.

Credenza Desks with Hutches

A credenza desk with a hutch adds storage above the work surface, making use of vertical space without substantially increasing the footprint of the furniture. Depending on the furniture collection, hutches may provide cabinets, shelving, or a combination of open and enclosed storage for books, binders, office supplies, and personal items.

This configuration works especially well when the credenza is placed against a wall. In both home and professional offices, adding a hutch can provide significant storage while keeping frequently used materials within reach of the workstation.

Credenzas in Executive Desk Sets

Credenza desks are often used as the back portion of an executive desk set. In a U-shaped executive desk configuration, the primary desk is connected by a bridge to the credenza positioned behind the user. This provides work surfaces on three sides and allows the user to move between the primary desk and credenza without leaving the workstation.

The credenza portion of an executive desk set can provide additional desktop space and storage and is commonly used as the location for a hutch. It can also be used for computers, printers, phones, paperwork, and other equipment, helping keep the primary executive desk clear for everyday work and meetings with guests.

Credenza Desk Storage Options

Storage is one of the primary benefits of adding a credenza desk to an office. Depending on the furniture series, credenzas can be configured with drawers, filing storage, cabinets, shelving, and hutches. Modular office furniture makes it possible to select the storage components that best fit the needs of the user.

When the credenza is paired with a primary desk, this additional storage can help keep files, supplies, and equipment away from the main work surface while remaining close enough to access throughout the day.

Using a Credenza Desk for Computers and Equipment

The credenza desktop is a practical location for equipment that would otherwise take up valuable space on the primary desk. Printers, desktop phones, computers, reference books, and other frequently used items can be positioned on the credenza while leaving the main desk available for paperwork, projects, and meetings.

Monitor arms and mounts are especially useful with credenza desks. Raising monitors above the desktop reduces the amount of work surface occupied by monitor stands and can provide additional room for a keyboard, laptop, paperwork, and other equipment. This is particularly helpful when using a compact credenza as a home office computer desk.

Credenza Desk Materials and Finishes

Many commercial credenza desks use laminate construction. Laminate office furniture provides a durable work surface while making it possible for manufacturers to offer coordinated desks, credenzas, hutches, filing cabinets, and storage furniture in matching finishes.

Credenza desks are available in many popular office furniture finishes, including black, white, gray, espresso, oak, maple, cherry, and mahogany. Available finishes vary by furniture collection, so selecting the credenza from the same series as the primary desk is often the easiest way to coordinate the furniture throughout the office.

Choosing the Right Credenza Desk

Start by determining how the credenza will be used. For a home office, consider the amount of desktop space required for a computer, monitors, paperwork, and other equipment. If the credenza will support a primary office desk, consider which equipment and storage can be moved to the credenza to keep the main work surface organized.

For an executive office, determine whether the credenza will be a standalone piece behind the desk or part of a larger executive desk set. Also consider storage requirements, whether a hutch is needed, and the amount of space available between the primary desk and credenza. Measure the office before ordering to ensure there is sufficient room for the furniture, office chair, drawers, cabinet doors, and walking space.
