Introduction

Who decided that office chairs must have wheels?

I mean, really think about it.

There are a million pieces of furniture, and they have their traditional designs and modern takes, but with office chairs, no matter what, the design seems to be saying, you have and will roll around your office.

I think differently.

Of course, there are many benefits to office chairs with wheels, but the most basic, traditional, and common chair design is a stationary chair, which has pluses and minuses too.

In this article, we'll dive into the benefits, and drawbacks of stationary office chairs and share a few tips on features, styles, and ergonomics if you're looking to invest in one.

Benefits of No Wheel Desk Chairs

While desk chairs themselves are always designed for long hours of sitting and take into consideration a variety of tasks that may be performed in the chair, it is safe to say that no-wheel desk chairs have a few benefits that belong solely to their design.

For one, they promote better posture and reduce back pain which may come from the strain of using your legs to roll you around. While encouraging movement and stretching they also tend to be more suitable for small spaces as they don't need to accommodate a large base for wheels, and if the space has uneven floors there's no danger of sliding in another direction.

Desk chairs without wheels are also known to be a more stylish and modern complement to office decor. When manufacturers are freed from typical office chair structures such as wheels; designs, colors, and materials can vary greatly, adding an abundance of style options to the office chair market.

That being said, they too pose their drawbacks.

Drawbacks of No Wheel Desk Chairs

As you may have probably guessed the first drawback is their limited mobility. It isn't easy to move from place to place around your office or between tasks without wheels. This can also make it difficult to move the chair to completely new locations.

Another limitation is that they aren't suitable for certain workstyles. If the limited mobility is an issue for you then chances are you're in a position that requires a lot of back and forth, within a small area around your desk making stationary office chairs your ergonomic enemy.

As a stationary office chair user myself, I do find one more drawback, and that is feeling trapped. I do not need to roll from task to task but I stay in one place for the duration of my work. Even though my chair swivels I find getting in and out of my desk quickly and easily without the easy mobility of an office chair with wheels to be a bit of a compromise. (Though I have a giant comfy chair that I can sink into while working so, it was a worthy trade.)

Types of Stationary Desk Chairs

If the drawbacks weren't an issue for you then you're probably already in the market for a stationary chair. Whatever your job and no matter your workstyle, here are a few of the most common types of no-wheel desk chairs to give you a better idea about what's on the market:

  • Armless office desk chair - These offer a minimalist look that, similar to ditching the wheels, allows those who have no need for armrests and prefer a more streamlined chair design to furnish their workspace.

  • Cross-legged office chair - For a unique and stylish design, cross-legged office chairs help to dress up your office space by use of carefully crafted details, which again, similar to wheel-less desk chairs, ditches the conventional for something more interesting for the space.

  • Ergonomic office chair - As far as optimal comfort and support losing wheels doesn't mean losing ergonomics. You can still enjoy comfort, adjustability, and chairs suited to your body that alleviate problems with long hours of sitting. The most common features are lumbar support, adjustable armrests, and adjustable seat height, tilt, and more.

  • Swivel office chairs - Still need a bit of mobility? Swivel office chairs allow the base of the seat to move up to 360 degrees giving you flexibility and ease of movement.

  • Upholstered office chair - Fabrics give users a luxurious and comfortable seating experience while also showcasing their unique style and taste. Breathable materials including mesh or fabric upholstery wick away sweat and moisture to keep you cool and dry. But don't worry, even upholstered chairs utilize wood and metal for frames and overall durability and longevity of the chair.
